Whose Dog is it, Anyway? -
On Pets, Ownership, Slavery

The dog next door wants to move in. He's been hungry. He's sometimes cold. He's left alone, sometimes for days, in the barn. We have two dogs, nine cats (we live in the country) - and a warm house where our pets are welcome. We'd like to give him a home. But he belongs to the farm next door.

He wants to live with us. He comes to us whenever he's let loose - comes and stays outside our door, lying against the door for hours, waiting for us to relent and let him in. With us he has hope - because we've often let him in, including overnight. it does not feel right to me that the dog next door should have no say in where he lives.

Do we have the right to own dogs and cats, or should they be allowed to make some decisions on their own - like where they prefer to live?

This question may sound absurd to you. But it used to be considered normal - not up for questioning - for people to own other people.         MORE

We're born with the capacity to feel.
What we learn to do with it,
is what matters.

Do we learn to cut off from others? Or do we learn empathy for animals as well as humans? Do we learn that even if we care, there's nothing we can do? Or do we learn that, if we keep trying, maybe we can find a way to make things better?

"It is a fact readily acknowledged, that for humans,
an idea is much more powerful than a fact."

I don't know who wrote that, but I will take that as my springboard for some ideas of mine.
One idea is that, just as ideas can close our minds (the idea that one race is better than another, for example),
ideas can expand them.

The Idea Emporium Explores
Animal Rights and More

One of my lifelong concerns has been trying to make sense of reality. What is happening? Why is this happening?
And with that I come to ideas - ideas about reality, ideas that need to be checked against reality,
not just believed in like the tooth fairy is accepted by a child. Some of those are ideas about animal rights and more,
about dog animal rights, cat animal rights, wild animal rights, animal liberation right or wrong, animal rights and abuse,
animal rights and welfare, animal rights and protection. Like here, usually the spark is something specific -
in this case the specific case of the dog next door.

I know the situation is in flux - in a good way. Fewer people accept that we have the right, either because we're at the head
of the food chain or because some deity gave it to us, to lord it over animals, to slaughter all we like, to treat them any way
we like. Yet we are so far from how they should be treated. Chickens and pigs are raised in tiny areas with no space
to move - great for the slaughterhouse system. But that did not spark me to write. Others have written about this eloquently.
I wrote when I was myself caught - what rights should the dog have, the owner have, when the animal wasn't being abused?

Animal rights and more. I was stuck. Still am, now over a year later. The dog lives next door, usually tied outdoors,
except in very cold weather when he's in the barn - he had taking to bothering neighboring cattle, totally unacceptable.
I rarely see him. But I still worry about him, want all to be well with him.

And I still care about the underlying questions relating to animal rights and more. I sit and puzzle:
animal rights and abuse what is abuse, what rights should an animal have;
animal liberation right and wrong - this in a world with so much human suffering, starvation, war:
animal philosophy right and not-so-right.
I hear views on animal rights, sometimes shudder and sometimes an encouraged;
I think about pet ownership and slavery - and recognize how much we as a species are changing
in our attitudes to human rights - and also in our views on
animal rights and welfare, animal rights and protection.

The Idea Emporium - a space for our ideas about animals, our conceptions of animals.

ANIMALS RIGHTS AND MORE - WHO KNOWS WHAT'S IN STORE.
ANIMAL RIGHTS AND MORE - MORE THAN RIGHTS, EMPATHY AND CARING.
ANIMAL RIGHTS AND MORE - RIGHTS ARE JUST A MEANS TO PROTECT.
ANIMAL RIGHTS AND MORE - I KEEP COMING TO CARING.
CHILDREN'S STORIES - ANIMAL RIGHTS AND MORE, WAY MORE -
I KEEP COMING TO ANIMAL RIGHTS AND MORE,
DON'T KNOW WHAT'S IN STORE,
ANIMAL RIGHTS AND MORE,
SO MANY HOPES FOR A WORLD AS IT COULD BE.

Animal rights and more: animal rights case,
Animal rights and more: animals issue right,
animal rights versus human rights,
animal have right, animal rights discussion, plus, plus ...
