The dog next door wants to move in. He's been hungry. He's sometimes cold. He's left alone, sometimes for days, in the barn. We have two dogs, nine cats (we live in the country) - and a warm house where our pets are welcome. We'd like to give him a home. But he belongs to the farm next door. He wants to live with us. He comes to us whenever he's let loose - comes and stays outside our door, lying against the door for hours, waiting for us to relent and let him in. With us he has hope - because we've often let him in, including overnight. it does not feel right to me that the dog next door should have no say in where he lives. Do we have the
right to own dogs and cats, or should they be allowed to make some decisions
on their own - like where they prefer to live? |

| We're
born with the capacity to feel. What we learn to do with it, is what matters. Do we learn to cut off from others? Or do we learn empathy for animals as well as humans? Do we learn that even if we care, there's nothing we can do? Or do we learn that, if we keep trying, maybe we can find a way to make things better? |

| "It
is a fact readily acknowledged, that for humans, an idea is much more powerful than a fact." I don't know who wrote that, but I will take that as my springboard for some ideas of mine. One idea is that, just as ideas can close our minds (the idea that one race is better than another, for example), ideas can expand them. ___________________________________________ comments, responses, further
