When he was 4 days old, Scruffers almost died.
I suddenly heard high pitched squeaks ...
I rushed to where the kittens were, curled in a corner of the closet,
so tiny, eyes closed. Only 6 kittens. It couldn't be. I counted again. 6.
But there were 7 kittens. Where was the seventh?
Again, the squeak. Where? Where was it coming from?
The stairwell. I ran down the stairs.
There was the dog, our dog, with the kitten in its mouth - and blood.
I hadn't worried about keeping Fluffers away from the newborn kittens.
After all, she was fine with our cats.
Now, blood. I carefully took the kitten from her mouth.
A hole in its belly. A hole in one hip.
I was panicked, so terrified the little kitten would die in my hands.
I was desperate for help.
A neighbor came to my rescue - drove me to the vet as I sheltered
the kitten, tiny in the palm of my hand.
The kitten stayed alive. I was so grateful.
The vet's verdict: the leg wasn't broken, and as for the hole in the belly,
he had no idea if there was deep damage to the liver. Time would tell.
The kitten was clearly not well enough to be with the litter -
so the vet showed me how to massage so the kitten would eliminate -
normally the mother would do this. With no massage, the kitten would die.
For the next couple of days, I would hold the tiny kitten to his mother
while he fed, then take him away. I massaged his tiny tummy downward.
Time passed. He healed.
Weeks later, I was about to give him away, when I bumped into
the neighbor who had given my the lift to the vet.
"How's the survivor?" he asked.
"Fine, just fine. He'll probably be given away in the next day or so.
Gerry said, with utter conviction, "You can't give away the survivor."
I'm so grateful for Gerry's words - because without them,
Scruffers would have been gone from my life, and I would have missed
out on his warm easy love, his gentle lovingness.
He bonded with me somehow. It surprised me, as he was back
with the other kittens long before his eyes opened.
I've wondered, does he on some deep level know I rescued him
and took care of him lovingly?
Anyway, he is lying beside me now, purring gently, quietly, peacefully.
He radiates well-being, love and trustingness.
He has two nicknames - the Survivor, for obvious reasons, and Rubber Band, because he's so flexible and easy to hold any way at all.
He looks so very much like one of the other cats - the Scaredy Cat Princess.
So similar in looks - so many differences within.
