THE HIGHEST WALLS

The highest walls
   the thickest of all
The hardest walls
   the hardest of all
  walls inside myself

Like the walls of a dam
   Like a fortress that guards
Like an iceberg that holds
   something deep in the cold
      something alive
      but it can't thrive
      can barely survive

Sometimes a glimpse
      comes of what's inside
   grief like a tide
   grief more than fear
   grief more than love

Is there love behind the grief
like a valley on the other side of hills?

There is grief
   oceans deep
but I don't weep
my eyes are dry

I try to find my way in

How could those walls
       come tumbling down
           melt
               crumble

Would I be swept under, I wonder
Would I be swept aside

There have been breaks
       in that thick thick wall
    deep grief
                from which grew
                              life
    grief after love, after loss

And then the wall was back

But the landscape had changed

Is there a door somewhere?
Is there a sluice gate
so I could choose to let water flow?

A wall with gates is not a wall at all -
not like the wall of thorns
      holding Sleeping Beauty in
not like a prison wall

Is there a way to
   not tumble the wall
   not make it all fall
but to let me over
let me in and explore?
is there a magic key?
has it been long enough? -
    like Sleeping Beauty's hundred years
am I agile and strong enough?
or could I slip through the wall?

Could there be
changing landscapes
reshaping
as I find ways
over under through the wall?

A dozen years ago,
I began to wake up
with word pieces -
words music, spoken word, songs -
in my head.
Escape velocity.
Echo of the echo.
Tank almost empty.
Can't cross the gap.
Welcome into my world.
