                                 Fluffers died, hit by a car, last night.
                                 I loved her so much,
                                 and did not protect her enough.

                                 ELSA

                                 On Wednesday, I woke up
                                 feeling she was much farther away.
                                 I still want her back so much,
                                 but don't feel her as near –
                                 though who knows? –
                                 maybe it's just that I'm not good
                                 at feeling her presence.
                                 I do want, above all, that if any of her
                                 is still around, that she knows
                                 I love her so much and want her
                                 to be free to do whatever
                                 is most right for her now.

Within days, a book started coming -
The Fluffers Book,
about Caro Carolina, 13,
Geela Gribbs,
and Fluffers the invisible dog.

It starts,
"Geela Gribbs was known as more than a little weird."
She is known as weird because with her is a dog,
invisible to most people,
a special dog - Fluffers.

And now the fifth anniversary of Fluffers' death
is approaching - and it is five years after her death
that in the book, Fluffers is getting ready to leave Geela,
and Geela is more ready to let her go.

the words are cold -

the closest words that come to the feeling -

the words - dog poem - are cold,
leave me untouched
do not come near my heart
do not touch what's at the heart of this

love, love of someone special

dog love, animal love - again cold words
and yet so tender are the feelings
so aching is the grief

my words come
from loving
this poem comes
from love

these poems for someone special
come from a love deep and real

but the feelings are not in these words

they are in ...

and lukewarm words -

cold cold words

these bring back nothing

but the simple words of love
of loving
of death and grieving
they bring her back
they bring her alive

they bring back my loving
my grief, my loss
