A WELCOME - NOT AN INVASION

years and years ago, I started teaching - such a gift to me. Because I had suddenly found a place where what I wanted to give - the many things I had learned about novels, about reading them and loving them - those many things were welcome.

likewise this welcome into my world needs to be a welcome, not an invasion.

my father, in his desperation for an audience, invaded. He needed to be listened to - but did not know how to get lots of people interested. yet he had so much talent, such an ability to make his experiences alive.

I know his sense of urgency, because it has been my own since childhood, when I wrote a play, and a couple of years a film script - and hungered for a way to get them out into the world.

I was persistent. I think of Christopher Columbus, and his quest for funding for his long voyage westward. I'm sure it wasn't easy.

So hard to get out into the world.

But then there is something else - the urgent need not to invade, suffocate, drown others with our need to be heard.

Maybe I have often not reached out because I was no afraid of clutching others who wanted nothing more than to run away.

Anyway, today's thought is that you are welcome - to enter, to linger, and to leave as it pleases you.

What a relief.
