posted by Vince Lombardo, July 4, 2009:

I am writing in response to your very intriguing piece about empathy and Islam. There is no empathy for outsiders in the Koran.

First of all, empathy derives from the Golden Rule: to love your neighbor as yourself. The term "Golden Rule" came into use as American and British abolitionists sought to awaken the conscience of society against the injustice of enslavement.

Secondly, the Koran does not contain the Golden Rule in any form. It is also absent from Islam's secondary writings as well. The Islamic counterpart to the Golden Rule is a doctrine called al-Walaa wal-Baraa which is roughly translated as "association with Muslims and staying clear of infidels". Al-Walaa wal-Baraa is a form of Islamic apartheid for Muslims in which Muslims cultivate the company of fellow Muslims and entirely avoid the contamination of the infidel. Al-Walaa wal-Baraa is considered the second most important fundamental doctrine of Islam and the best supported of any doctrine in the Koran. Some of the Koranic verses that support it are:

"Mohammed is Allah's apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another." (Sura 48.29)

"Prophet, make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites, and deal harshly with them. Hell shall be their home: an evil fate." (Sura 9.73)

"O believers, fight the unbelievers who are near to you, and let them find in you a harshness, and know that Allah is with the god-fearing." (Sura 9.123)

"Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah, and those who reject faith fight in the cause of evil: so fight ye against the friends of Satan." (Sura 4:76)

"O you who believe! Do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends. They are friends of one another. And whoever of you takes them for friends is (one) of them. Surely Allah does not guide wrongdoing people.? (Sura 5:51)

"Do not support the infidels in any way." (Sura 28: 86)

The purpose of the Golden Rule is to awaken empathy. The purpose of al-Walaa wal-Baraa is (according to an Islamic website):

Hatred for the sake of Allah, or Al Mu'adaat (hatred), this is the opposite of Al Muwalaat (love), it is:

To Hate
- To keep distance from
- To be enemy to
- To desert
- To decline to help
- To disrespect
- To put down
- Not to ally with
- Not to support

Allah ordered us to have Baraa, from the kuffar and from kufr and shirk. He (swt) ordered us to have walaa with...the believers.

****

As you can see, Elsa, this is a doctrine of total separation (or apartheid) from non-Muslims.

The purpose of this doctrine is to reduce the infidel in dignity and remove any sympathy or empathy for them on the part of pious Muslims.

I am not making any of this up and I hope you will verify every word I have written by searching on the internet.

The basis of Islam's view of the "Other" is al-Walaa wal-Baraa and it is a very dim view.

The basic idea is that infidels are criminals because they do not agree with Mohammed and are also diseased and stricken with unbelief. Allah has intentionally misled the infidels and Muslims are to bring them under Islamic rule and then strictly control them until all religions except for Islam disappear. Modernist, "reform" Muslims are trying to reinterpret Islam to be more tolerant, but their attempted reforms may not be successful due to the unchanging nature of Islamic teachings based on the idea that the Koran is perfect and Allah left nothing out of it. (He left out the Golden Rule.)

Elsa's reply, July 5, 2009:

You start with "empathy derives from the Golden Rule." As far as I've been able to make out, the Golden Rule derives from empathy - which in turn encourages the development of more empathy.

Example. We have a "social worker" cat, Persia ...

Golden Rule in Religion

I don't look at the golden rule in religion - I explore action, behavior.
So when it comes to Islam beliefs, I look at actions, and from those see tracks that lead to beliefs, see where these actions are likely to be rooted. Not in empathy, clearly not.

And when it comes to Islam and Christianity and Buddhism and Hinduism - I remember Buddhist monks burning themselves to death, not killing others. Clearly the roots of their behavior are in very different beliefs: so much empathy for others that they were willing to sacrifice their lives; and also so much belief that others would feel for them.

I also remember Gandhi, Hindu, being for non-violent actions. Of course I know there is Hindu violence. There is definitely a Hindu caste system - not much empathy there. With Hinduism, a barrier I see is an ideology which emphasizes karma - something that cuts off empathy: they deserve to be where they are; they will be rewarded in a future life if they life this one well. There's clearly more than one way to cut off empathy.

Anyway, the Golden Rule in religion - something to consider.

Islam and the West - huge differences in outlook.

Islam and the West - my big question: how well does the West understand the underpinnings of Islam. Millions and millions of people in the West are so used to saying: we're all the same, we're all equal, all religions are pretty well the same thing - that differences between Islam and the West are very generally not seen.
