comments on Islam, the West and Empathy

posted by Vince Lombardo, July 29, 2009:

I have a further comment to make regarding the Golden Rule and Islam. I know that, despite the evidence I have provided, some Muslims claim that the Golden Rule does exist in Islam. Here is a full examination of the pertinent texts:

Many websites quote the same three Islamic “hearsay reports” (hadiths), allegedly from Mohammed, in which there is an exhortation to treat others as “brothers”. Most Islamic scholars have traditionally held the word "brother" in these hadiths to refer only to "brother" Muslims and not to non-Muslims.

A medieval Islamic jurist called Al-Nawawi said the verse could be applied to humanity at large, but only in a very restricted and specific way: he permitted Muslims to pray for the conversion of hated infidels. That is as far as this alleged Golden Rule may be applied in Islam.

Normatively, Muslim may not speak to an infidel with the same level of respect
reserved for a "brother" Muslim. The infidel should be made to feel a social and religious inferior by the Muslim even in matters of salutation! The infidel should be "hated in the heart" by the Muslim with a pure religiously-motivated hatred "for the sake of Allah". I am not making this up.

No infidel may be complimented, verbally encouraged or shown empathy or sympathy by a Muslim. That would be considered "supporting" the infidels and encouraging them in their infidelity. Islam opposes any treatment of the infidel that might lessen the tendency towards Islamic political supremacy over the infidels.

****

A supremacist doctrine is one of three central doctrines of Islam.

This fundamental dualistic doctrine of Islam is called "al-Walaa wal-Baraa" (loyalty with Muslim versus segregation from infidels). Traditional, normative Islam commands a permanent religious apartheid with respect to infidels. Muslim religious leaders (the mullahs) only permit Muslims to associate with the infidels for the purposes of business and education. No socializing is permitted outside of work. Muslims may also speak to infidels for the purpose of convincing them to join Islam. This is called "dawa" (proselytization).

****

The reason we in the West do not understand these things about Islam is three-fold:

- firstly, we have little interest in this 7th century tribalistic cult
which practices animal, head and hand chopping, stoning and subjugation of women and considers illiteracy normative;

- secondly, the mullahs do their best to hide the many unattractive, supremacist and political aspects of Islam, portraying it as rather a reasonable, low-key alternative to Presbyterianism;

- thirdly, there is in Islam a doctrine called "taqiyya" which means the intentional, religiously-motivated deception of infidels if doing so will lead to an advantage for Muslims. This repulsive Islamic doctrine (taqiyya) and many others will be vigorously denied by Muslims when you bring them out in controversy, but only naive Westerners are deceived. Unfortunately, naivety is what Islamic apologists are counting on. However, one need only observe the second- or third-class treatment of "the other" in Islamic countries to learn how the supremacism of Islam works in practice.

****

Muslim countries are jointly trying to impose censorship upon the entire United Nations Organization in order to give Islamic dictatorship unrestricted control free from international scrutiny.

****

The absence of the Golden Rule in the Koran, in the chronicled narratives and early "reports" of sayings of Mohammed and his companions should reveal what Islam is about.

Islam does not say, "love thy neighbor"... It says, "subjugate thy neighbor and force him/her to submit". Islam means "submission". No one is as submitted as a slave. You may choose to disbelieve it, but slavery is still to this day an inseparable part of Islam and because it is recommended in the Koran... Allah's complete and perfect book... It can never be removed.

The "Golden Rule" is a term created to motivate the British and Americans to abolish slavery in the early part of the 19th century.

****

What follows is a detailed examination of al-Nawawi's commentary about the alleged Islamic Golden Rule. I will begin with the indisputable conclusion:

AL-NAWAWI IN NO WAY SUPPORTS THE GOLDEN RULE

Nowhere in Islam is there a clear expression of the Golden Rule that one finds in other religions.

Alterity is a philosophical principle of exchanging one's own perspective for that of the "other". Islam does not teach it, but rather the reverse, that "the other" must meet Islam on Islam's own terms... as a humbled supplicant, rather than as an equal with Muslims.

Al-Nawawi's quote about desiring for others what a pious Muslim desires for himself refers only to the religious conversion of the infidels to Islamic faith. It is in no way about the Golden Rule. Al-Nawawi would know what the hadith means; he is the person who wrote the text and the person who commented on it. Imam al-Nawawi was a very careful writer.

Imam al-Nawawi's own explanation of these alleged words of Mohammed disproves the inventive theory that this hadith is an exhortation to the universal use of the Golden Rule by Muslims. Here are Nawawi's own comments:

Nawawi, Sharh Arba'in, 123: "It is better for that [saying of the Prophet, (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him!) to be interpreted in the sense of universal brotherhood, so that it includes the non-Muslim and the Muslim. Thus he wants for his non-Muslim brother what he would want for himself, that is [read: min li-l-bayan] his converting to Islam; just as he wants for his Muslim brother, his remaining in Islam. That is why it is recommended to supplicate for divine guidance [Hidaya] on behalf of the non-Muslim."

Al-Nawawi's own words expose the impermissible and daring addition of the Golden Rule into the allegedly perfect and complete words of Allah. If one needs to add the Golden Rule to the Koran, the Koran is no longer perfect, but incomplete and flawed.

In his hadith, Al-Nawawi does not call for universal love and charity. He narrowly allows for intercessory prayer so that the infidels may be converted and all become Muslims. He does not pray that infidels may enjoy good health, prosperity or better circumstances.

Al-Nawawi's narrow supremacist intercession is a far-cry from suggesting a Muslim may perform in thought, in word or in deed, anything helpful or supportive for the kufaar. Such "support" or help for the infidels would not only encourage them in their thought crime of infidelity, but it would cancel out al-Walaa wal-Baraa as the normative dualistic ethics of Islam... Muslims are to be "merciful with Believers"... and "ruthless with the infidels." (Koran 48:29) Allah’s perfect Koran does not want Muslims to have empathy for the infidels, but a hard-hearted "ruthlessness" towards them. If the infidels suffer, "they have it coming to them" for their presumption in rejecting Allah's religion.

"Supporting", helping or loving the infidels contradicts Allah's commandment, al-Baraa of normative Islam. Empathy for the infidels is a sin.

Koran 28:86 says, "Therefore lend not thou support in any way to those who reject Allah's Message." "In any way" would include empathy.

Every Muslim knows this previous verse (but often they will pretend that it is a sort of hyperbole not to be taken literally).

Islam is inherently tribalistic. Tribalism is the support of the tribe and the rejection of "the other". It is the opposite of the Golden Rule. Koran 28:86 is clearly a divine commandment to do nothing supportive for the person who is not a Muslim. Consequently, a Muslim must never have any "empathy" for the kafir, since that would also be "support". Al-Walaa wal-Baraa removes empathy for infidels and reserves it for Muslims alone. This is pure tribalism. This is the real Islam, not New Age Islam or some other misrepresentation.

Al-Nawawi makes one very trivial concession in his commentary: a Muslim may pray that the wicked kufaar become Muslims. However, this prayer for the infidels' conversion can in no way be interpreted as "supporting" them, since it supports Islamic supremacism and asks for the destruction of infidelity. For that reason, the rule of al-Walaa wal-Baraa still holds. Al-Baraa means that all Muslims must shun, avoid, repudiate, obstruct, reject, disown, disassociate from, stay clear from and otherwise "hate them (the infidels) in their heart as part of our worship for the sake of Allah (swt)."

No hadith (hearsay report of Mohammed and his companions) is valid if it contradicts the Koran. Al-Nawawi's hadith (hearsay report of Mohammed) in no way supports the Golden Rule against the fundamental doctrine of al-Walaa wal-Baraa.

A Koranic verse similar to this hadith is:

"The Believers are but a single Brotherhood: So make peace and reconciliation between your two (contending) brothers; and fear Allah, that ye may receive Mercy." [EMQ 49: 10]
It is clear to textual experts that a number of hadiths were elaborated following Koranic verses. The original Koranic text apparently refers to jihadists squabbling over the spoils of jihad, a common occurrence in the Sira and Hadiths. Eventually, verses were quoted and requoted with excursions away from the original. The result was hearsay "reports" similar to the original Koranic text, but leaving out the reference to the rancorous venality of the first jihadists which this verse was supposed to curb.

Many academics have concluded that Koranic verses were festooned, amplified, reworded, reinterpreted and finally turned into many of the 500,000 “hearsay reports" during the party wars of the 8th and 9th centuries. These politicized, made-up reports were attributed to some important figure, often Mohammed, in order to enhance their authority and oppose some rival warring faction during the Islamic blood feuds of the 8th century. No doubt, ultimatums for Muslims to "get along with one another" were greatly needed at the time when Caliph Abu Bakr's son was one of Caliph Uthman's murderers, Umar's son fought against him and even the sons of the so-called, "Rightly Guided" Caliphs of Islam were striving to kill one another. Islam's royal family drowned itself in rivers of Muslim blood. The Sira and Ahadith were part of the propaganda of psychological warfare of the time.

Fourteen hundred years of classical Islamic jurisprudence does not contain a single piece of evidence for a Golden Rule in Islam. There is no Golden Rule Islam.

It is fair to say that, rather than singling it out for opposition, Islamic jurisprudence simply ignored the Golden Rule or was totally unaware of it.

Tribalistic al-Walaa wal-Baraa opposes the universal Golden Rule very nicely. There is no evidence in Islamic literature to support a touchy-feely, innovative Islam.

A New-Age interpretation of al-Nawawi (of many Islam apologists) is imaginary, if not intentionally misleading. Touchy-feely Islam is bi da'... sinful innovation.

I can only assume the apologists claim al-Nawawi's support for the Golden rule either because

- firstly, they are engaging in verbal jihad
and committing a taqiyya to win an argument against the kafir (they assume no infidel will be able to find the original text of al-Nawawi's commentary) or

- secondly, they often have not even bothered to read Nawawi Sharh Arba'in, 123.

****

Either way, it is disturbing. It discredits the Golden Rule and reveals that Muslims do not use it. Verbal jihad would require suppressing the Golden Rule, for Islam does not allow the utterance of disagreement with Islam. One may think “wrong thoughts”, but not express disagreement with Mohammed in public under pain of death. This is the basis of the cartoon riots and assassinations.

In conclusion, Golden Rule Islam does not exist. the Golden Rule does not and can not exist within Islam, unless one violates a core tent of Islam - the perfection of the Koran - which is absolutely prohibited.

Golden Rule Islam

I've had it drilled into me: we're all alike, underneath. Also, religions are all basically alike.

I never bought that. In the first place, I know that not all branches of the Christian religion are alike. Some are harsh and punitive. Others are lovey-dovey.

But the Muslim religion was basically something I didn't think about. I remember that, in high school, when we studied India - quite briefly - I found it hard to keep Hinduism and the Muslim religion apart in my mind. I just knew that the adherents of the 2 religions didn't get along.

Now I'm taking a serious look. Is there a Golden Rule Islam - any branch of Islam, like some of the lovey-dovey branches of Christianity, which has openly incorporated "love thy neighbor - no matter what their religion - as thyself" into its ideology? Has any branch of the Islamic religion open become a Golden Rule Islam?

Not that I know.

***

By and large, by the way, traditionally Christianity sought to convert all non-Christians, saw non-Christians as infidels, pagans. But there has been a considerable shift. Plus I don't recall any passages as venemously against non-believers as in the Islamic texts.
