The room was
utterly quiet ...
No Fluffers ...

Then it was tag time. And splash time. They ran by the ocean. Tag, splash, tag, splash. Caro was way better at splashing. But Fluffers was better at shaking water off herself.  Caro splashed Fluffers as hard as she could. Fluffers shook the water off as fast as she could. Caro splashed even harder. Fluffers shook herself even harder. Then Caro started laughing and couldn't stop. She laughed and laughed so much she laughed herself awake.
The room was utterly quiet, except for the sound of the waves which came through the open window. No Fluffers. But happiness radiated through Caro.
She soon fell asleep again, imagining that Fluffers was curled up at the foot of the bed – which was clean the next morning, no impression of Fluffers.
But Caro was happier than she had been for a long time. She was so happy she felt like doing cartwheels, though she had never been able to do cartwheels.
She came downstairs two steps at a time. Her mother was snappy, “Didn't I say that …?"
            Caro hardly heard.
In town, Cassie and Liana began their favorite game – look and laugh – this time about Caro. “It’s a peanut.” “No, it’s a raisin.” “No, it’s a noodle.” Caro just didn't care. She felt they could completely cut her dead and it wouldn't matter. How could it matter? She still had her head in the clouds, was still flying high with Fluffers. She didn't think ahead to when the two weeks would be up, and Geela would leave. She didn't want to think that far ahead.

In the daytime, she would see Geela sitting on the beach or on her veranda, petting something invisible, talking to something invisible. "You want your belly scratched? Is that it, Fluffers? You want your little belly scratched?"
Who would want to do that, Caro wondered? In the first place, didn't Geela know everyone was laughing at her? If it was Caro, she would at least have gone where no one could see her.
Plus, wasn’t Geela just bored to death? But Geela didn't seem bored.
Most of the time, Caro would pass by quickly, leave Geela and her invisible dog to themselves.
This time, as Caro was on her way into the house, Geela turned and waved. "Good dreams?
Caro felt a little guilty. "Yes."
"They must be doozers. Fluffers is quieter than I've seen for ages. Happier."
