kid stories with spirit animal

Her father believed in what he made with his hands. Her mother believed in the earth and the sky and the ocean – and that summer would always bring enough money to get them through the winter. But was there anything else? There was a god. There was no god. There was heaven and hell. There was no heaven and hell. There was only one right religion. All religions were the same thing. There was no right religion.
But was there anything else? There was a god. There was no god. There was heaven and hell. There was no heaven and hell. There was only one right religion. All religions were the same thing. There was no right religion.
She never used to wonder about that kind of thing. Now she did, over and over.
Who was right? According to Fran Perkins, everything happens for a reason, even the most awful things, and everything was turning out as it should, no matter how awful it was. Fran would say that and smile dreamily. If Caro's dad was anywhere around, he would snort. He believed things happen by chance. In her mother's world, though, we choose, and our choices matter. Our choices can change everything. She and her dad had chosen to build Pirate's Den. It was all meant to be, Fran Perkins would intone dreamily.
The worst was Mr. Fronznick, her principal. At some point in his welcoming speech, which was the same each and every year, he smiled a great big wide smile, half closed his tiny eyes, nodded about five times, and said every opinion was equally valid.
But how could that be? That would mean her parents and Mrs. Falks and Fatima and Fran Perkins were all right, even though they disagreed with each other. That would mean Geela’s dog did and didn’t exist. The same went for heaven and hell. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that that made no sense.
So many questions, and so many people ready with answers which couldn't all be right. Which world was real and which wasn't? Caro wanted to solve things, to stop the questions in her head. But she had no idea how to.
She wasn't even sure how to bring up the dream and her fear to Geela.
She knew she would, though. Inside her, words kept forming, getting to the tip of her tongue and not quite making it out. "Is Fluffers real?" "Can Fluffers hurt anyone?"
Caro and Geela kept walking, kept getting closer to home. The words kept getting louder and louder inside Caro. She stopped.

****

the beginning     just before

Meg, Jon and Myra Face a Cold and Rainy Day

There was not supposed to be a bang. They were supposed to be peacefully reading kid stories.
But there was a bang, loud and yet a bit muffled.
It sounded as if it was coming from the basement.

No one moved. All thee of them were silent.
Meg started droning in her head. Kids story, kids story.

Then came a longer hollow kind of sound. Again it seemed to be coming from deep below.

Meg and Jonathan looked at each other. Each of them could see that the other didn't have a clue what it was.
Myra looked at Meg and Jonathan. She could see the blank looks on their faces.

Myra took charge, "I think we'd better find out what that was."

Meg closed her eyes and started silently running over words.
Kids stories, stories for kids, kids story, online kids books,
kids audio books, online audio books for kids.
And with that, she had run out of variation.

One of her grandmothers was Catholic and always mumbled words over and over.
Meg had no idea what the words were, but she could see that saying them over and over made her grandmother feel safe.
Kid stories, kids stories, stories for kids, kids story, online kids books.
And for good measure, children's stories, stories for children, children's story, online children's books.
In her head, she put an apostrophe in all the right places, the way her teachers liked, and the way Myra insisted was right.
That should make things even safer.

Then another muffled metallic clang came from the basement, and faintly echoed throughout the house.

Myra stood up, a determined look on her face. She was looking around for a weapon.
