CARO DREAMS

That night, Caro lay in bed a long time, pushing sleep away. She wanted not to be afraid of Fluffers. Geela had assured her that Fluffers would never do anything to hurt her. Also, Geela had added, no matter what, Fluffers couldn’t hurt her – when Caro was dreaming, her body was safe in bed.
Caro remembered how, at the start of the dream last night, she had felt fine, or almost fine. But she was still not completely sure. Usually she looked forward to dreaming.
Her mother didn’t have any time for dreams, but her father turned them over in his head, like he worked clay with his hands, pushing them this way and that. Often Caro stopped listening. Usually he liked only things he could touch, but somehow dreams were as real to him as sand and stones. Maybe he just needed to do something with his mind while his hands were busy. That’s what her mother said one time, and her father had laughed.
But he had never talked about a dream like the one from last night. And Caro had never had one like it.
Geela’s soothing words, and even Caro’s nightlight, as soft and steady as ever, couldn’t quiet all her fears. What if Geela had come to Harbor Cove just to find a new victim for Fluffers?
It took Caro a long time to fall asleep.

And then she was somewhere she had never been, in a large barn filled almost to the top with hay. Fluffers was there too, rolling in the hay. She shook herself, looked at Caro, then began to clamber upwards, almost swimming in the hay. Every few steps, she turned and looked back at Caro – pleadingly, or so it seemed. Caro decided to follow. It didn’t look dangerous.

Mystery, friendship and a search.

the beginning     just before

Meg, Jon and Myra Face a Cold and Rainy Day

Meg closed her eyes again. She wished she could close her ears.
It had to be the wind, she told herself.

Jon and Myra were silent. They were listening as hard as could be.
But neither of them went to the door.

The house stayed silent. Even the wind seemed to subside.

Maybe everything would be all right.

Meg hoped it helped, the words she was saying in her head.

And then Myra's way, with apostrophes: online children stories, online kids' books, children's audio books,
kids' audio books. Kids' stories. Kids' fiction. Children's literature. Children's books.

As long as she concentrated on the words Meg felt fine.

She didn't want to pay attention to Jon and Myra.
Jon would just laugh in an okay kind of way, but Myra would spend hours telling her she was being irrational, illogical and idiotic.

Now Meg silently thought her magic words just to stop thinking about what Myra would make her listen to.

Much better than listening to Myra.

The phone rang. It was Jonathan who answered.

There was no one at the other end of the line. No one who said anything, anyway.
They looked at each other. Online stories for children, online children stories.
Jon and Myra couldn't hear the words, but they were loud in Meg's head.

A gust of wind howled around the house.
