It was Valentine's Day.
An email popped into my inbox -
Roses are red. Is love obsolete?
Devotion's passe, but affection's so sweet.
Great that affections's so sweet, I thought.
But what about the big question:
Is love obsolete?
Is it?
What about all those true love poems,
I love you poems,
those millions of poems about love,
all that tender romantic love poetry?
Well, people used to think the earth is flat.
I remember being convinced the earth is flat.
I remember my shock when, at about 4 or 5,
I was told it was round. I was astounded.
All that to say, that even though millions have extolled love,
that doesn't mean it's worth extolling.
But my answer came out quickly.
Is love obsolete? Not on this street.
And yet I had to recognize that love isn't easy.
I never would have guessed how tough it can be,
how it touches us.
And I never would have guessed
how much heart ache there can be,
not because of others and misunderstandings -
the fodder of romantic love novels -
but because of inner blocks and buried love
and who knows what else.
So is love obsolete?
I sat and wrote.
I came up with something that sort of
fits within the category of simple love poems.
It definitely is poetry about love.
You could call it one of the truly true love poems.
If it ends up as one of your favorites,
you may classify it as among
the top love poems, best love poems.
And me?
I'm still on a quest to love fully.
