The tank is almost empty
The car is clean and tuned

The car runs smoothly
But all is not
                          as it seems

The tank is close to empty
The gauge has made that clear

Each curve and rise are mastered
But all is not

Gas stations are open
but you drive past

I know I cannot last

That fact is crystal clear

But the car runs so smoothly
Gears shifting, brakes braking
Cool from air conditioning

But the tank is almost empty
as we coast past another station
out into the landscape
each curve and rise easy driving

But all is not
                          as it seems

You are driving
The car is mine
I say
         Time to tank up
You say
         nothing
You ignore my words
         ignore the gauge
But it's time to tank up
         before we stall
                 on a short rise

It's time to tank up
       

before we stall

THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG

The words came first, along with what I call a rudimentary melody.

A friend of Ed's saw my ad for a musician and contacted me. I brought a whole slew of songs to our meeting. Tank Almost Empty was one of the pieces that appealed to him.

We worked on a cuple of variations - my singing it with my less than amazing singing voice, and my speaking it with Ed's guitar carrying the melody.

Then - a technical glitch. All our hard work was erased.

What you hear here is a quick re-recording of the spoken version. I have a song version as well. again something quickly re-recorded - I like parts, and maybe I will put it up, but only after there's a better version.

Anyway, time passed, years passed. Other projects. Life flowing very quickly.

Now I've dusted off this version for the web.

Now there's also Mark, for sound production and support.

My hope: that within a couple of months, there will be another recording, of both the spoken word version, and the song version.

The rough draft will be kept.

Re: the tank is almost empty. Right now, the tank seems to be filling a bt.
