What's my authentic self?
What's my authentic voice?
What's my inner truth,
my own truth.
As an expert with
expert credentials,
with professional expertise,
how do I convey my
authentic self,
authentic voice?
Authentic self?
Fear is authentic.
Is it good to express that,
show that as part of our
inner truth, our own truth?

Authentic Self, Authentic Voice.
Speaking as an Expert Speaker with Expert Opinion.
Speaking from the True Self. Speaking My Own Truth, Inner Truth.
BRAVE NEW DIRECTION - SPEAKING AS AN EXPERT
September 24, 2010
Task One. Find your authentic voice.
What's this about?
I'm trying to find the best way to get my ideas further out into the world - and so I'm taking a course on becoming a speaker. I think I will bring you along, at least for the beginning.
That brings me to Task One. Find Your Authentic Voice.
That felt so evident to me. Of course, use your authentic voice. Be your authentic self. Speak your own truth, inner truth - also drawing on professional expertise, on research. Speak from the true self as an expert.
So my first response was about find your authentic voice was: I've found it, I use it.
And then I came to: where do I use my authentic voice, and where do I hesitate? where do I back off? where am I unsure? where do I try not to ruffle feathers, not to upset? When do I tone down my own truth, my inner truth, and the information I have?
In my poetry - there the voice is authentic. The words come. I write them.
With ideas, the process is more complex. Will this reach you, I ask myself. Also, will you be angry? Will you misunderstand? Will you think I'm a bigot if I express something that isn't politically correct?
The biggest barrier, one I've been chipping away at for years - fear.
I haven't been afraid of taking on the traditional bad guys - racists, sexists, homophobes.
The fear comes most when I see things, explore things, and want to express things that may rouse hostility from those I see as like me.
There I've tended to tiptoe into bringing things up. And then, years late, I look back in wonder.
I
admire people who really speak up, speak their own truth, the facts, with deep inner conviction. Not with anger. With the kind of authenticity that comes from inner power.

I pause again. Another thing that has often been hard for me: showing uncertainty and, even more, vulnerability. Somewhere along the way, I learned I should be strong and have the answers - instead of being en route, slowly fumbling and stumbling toward them.
Authenticity - not so easy.

And that's it for now.
I have 3 links for you.
Here's an idea I found hard to dare to express. Still I didn't want to stay silent - I couldn't accept that it was okay to have a huge violent protest against a small cartoon. This is the first idea written for The Idea Emporium.

And then, here is part of
TIPTOEING THROUGH SILENCES
(a poem that's not on the web):
Tiptoeing through silences
Tiptoeing toward speech
Knowing what needs saying
Planning what needs saying
Waiting, debating, backing off from speech
While outside there's chatting, laughing, joking
serious discussion of serious issues
Other words wait inside
Other words
Easy words, like wallpaper
crowd every inch
Other words wait inside, held back
like cracks papered over by wallpaper
invisible
Yet tiptoeing through silences
Pushing toward speech
Other words need speaking ...

Finally, here's my favorite kind of authentic voice, one that flows with ease - in this case, about not knowing where this life will lead.
WHO IS THIS PERSON I CALL ME?
every day is flowing
into another
going
who knows where?
who knows where?
who knows where my life will lead?
who is this person I call me?

I want to bring that easy authenticity everywhere.
Lots more thoughts, but for now, enough.
