She wanted help. She knew what her parents would do. Her father would want proof of what had happened, which she could provide by going to Mr. Janoschevic. Her mother would be worried for Caro – if Caro went out alone at night one time, thinking she was dreaming, what if it happened again? There would be nothing Caro could say to that.
            Caro needed something else.
Something had happened, something big had just happened to her. There was only one person she could think of talking to. Geela Gribbs.
There was a trick way of opening the back door to Pirate's Den without a key. Only Caro's family knew about it. For the first time in her life, Caro entered, unbidden, when a guest was staying at Pirate's Den. She turned on the kitchen light and looked into the tiny living room, over to the bedroom. The bedroom door was open. Inside the bedroom was too dark for her to see.
            "Geela," she called softly. "Geela."
There was a stirring from the dark bedroom. "Mmmffr."
"Geela? It's Caro. From next door."
Caro could hear movement. In a few moments, Geela stood at the bedroom door, her eyes more closed than open, her hair every which way. She shook her head a few times, tiny shakes to get herself to wake up more. "You must know what time it is." She looked at Caro. "And you must have a very good reason to be here." Now she looked into Caro's eyes.

Everything suddenly felt right to Caro. Geela would understand. Caro would not have to explain. And maybe Geela could help. How? Caro had no idea. Caro felt sharply that she needed help.
"Come here," Geela said. "Let me hold you."
Then Caro knew that it was not help she needed. She leaned against Geela, felt her warmth, felt safety and comfort.

the beginning     just before

Meg, Jon and Myra Face a Cold and Rainy Day

"Can anyone tell me what is going on?" That was Myra. She didn't know what was going on,
but something had to be. Meg was looking at the dirty stranger as if she as someone she knew.

"Are you Caro?" Meg sounded very unsure of herself.

"Of course I'm Caro," said the dirty stranger. "And you? Who are you?"

Caro? Jonathan and Myra looked at each other. Caro was supposed to be a character, someone in some online kids books,
some online children stories. A kid story, a kid book was one thing. Someone showing up at the door was something else.
Online stories for children were meant to be about people staying in those stories.

Some things were real and others weren't. They were real. Caro wasn't.

Except that a dirty girl calling herself Caro was standing in front of them.

Meg's eyes closed. She was back with her words. Online kids books, online children stories, kid story, kid book,
online stories for children. They kept going through her head. Was there something she could do,
to get Caro back where she belonged? Maybe if she said things in some kind of backward order. Stories for children online,
kids books online, children's stories online. Meg wished she knew magic, real magic, not just stupid words she said
because she was scared.
