Stupid Opinion #1:
All Opinions
are Equal
I hear it from all sides: all opinions are equal. Most of my students - college students, not 5-year-olds - believe this rigidly, ardently, absolutely. The opinion doesn't make sense for hundreds of reasons. Just one example: it means that the opinion that slavery is good is equal to the opinion that slavery is bad.
But I've given that reason and dozens of others. Irrelevant. No dent in their opinion.
And then, one day, I realized: their opinion has nothing to do with thinking. It has to do with not thinking. They don't give - in fact, they don't have - any arguments, not even bad arguments, bad thinking. Nothing at all. Not even a logical fallacy. Not a single shred of backing.
They just "know" that opinions are equal.
I sat in stunned silence at the realization. Copernicus and Galileo - I understand you, trying to get the church to recognize that the earth is not the center of the universe. They were armed with facts. I'm armed with reasoning. So what. I might as well be armed with soap bubbles.
Why is this happening? Deeply internalized political correctness - so deeply internalized that people don't know it's there, and that they're not thinking.

The Idea Emporium - critical thinking vs not thinking
One of my lifelong concerns has been trying
to make sense of reality. What is happening? Why is this happening?
And with that I come to ideas - ideas about reality, ideas that need
to be checked against reality,
not just believed in like the tooth
fairy is accepted by a child.
But how does one check them? What qualifies
as proof, as evidence?
And the walls come tumbling down - at some point they do. Galileo and Copernicus eventually prevail.
I'm eager to when the current walls demanding not thinking crumble to dust,
leaving everyone astounded that anyone could ever have believed such bad thinking.
