THE ECHO OF THE ECHO
                     THE STORY

I feel the echo of the echo of your touch
                           It isn't much
I feel the faintest of faint traces on my face
                                    Then that's erased

       You take your distance
       My memory takes mine
       At least for now
       that's how
             it revives
                    me
fading the echo of the echo of your kind
                                     gaze
the faintest of faint traces of your mild
                                     face

Also
       your low-level irritation
              sometimes persistent
       and your sulky withdrawal
              are dimmed by distance

       I know deep inside
              somewhere they're there
                memories full and strong
       but they don't belong
right here, right now    with me
                                I could care
                                         too much

So just briefly I may feel
       the echo of the echo
       the faintest of the faintest
       fading     distant
       not insistent
       barely existent
just the faintest of faint
                echoes of the echoes
of what once was
                            some frustration
                            but much
                            vivid
                            daily
                            loving

THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG

This is an early piece. Like many of the pieces, the first lines hold the essence - I feel the echo of the echo of your touch, it isn't much. And like many, it's long been without a home.

I chose it as one of 3 pieces for a demo tape done in an attempt to get a grant. I remember how jam-packed the days were - I was putting together applications for 3 grants for 3 different projects - and the long drive to Michel Robidoux's home. (Also with Michel Robidoux, It's Taboo and Don't Waste My Time.)

There's always more to the story. Someone made the connection to Michel, and also did the recording and the mix. It's been years. I remember he chain smoked. And digging through my old falling-to-pieces address book, I come to his name: Ron Montanaro. And that brings me to Cindy Blackburn, who connected me with Ron. A long trail.

A trail that could have ended with the tape gathering dust until it somehow was thrown out.

Instead it's part of my slowly putting things together.

****

In the original recording with Michel Robidoux, the 3 pieces together told a story - something I've always liked, telling a story by stringing word pieces together. Now the story part has been cut, and the piece once again stands alone.

But i plan to have it, once more, be part of a story. Which story? That I don't know yet.

Where? That I know. On Zee's Cafe Cafe, or some variant of that - podcast, webcast, videocast.

Elsa, love poems and songs.

A dozen years ago,
I began to wake up
with word pieces -
words music, spoken word, songs -
in my head.
Escape velocity.
Echo of the echo.
Tank almost empty.
Can't cross the gap.
Welcome into my world.
