Jung Collective Unconscious. Scary Illusion,
Dangerous Illusion, Mass Histeria, Mass Hallucination.
Political Correctness Gone Mad plus New Age Spirituality.

I have some foggy notions around Jung's collective unconscious. That there's some kind of collective belief blob. That there's stuff so widely accepted it feels like reality to millions, though it's just part of a collective unconscious.

It's hard to change the hold of something that's part of a collective unconscious.

Why this interest?

I'm looking at unconscious underpinnings in the Western world, and also in New Age spirituality. In particular ...

THE GLOBAL VILLAGE AND MASS HALLUCINATION

It's a small world - news travels instantaneously around the globe.

So do thoughts - either through mass communication, mass sharing, or in whatever form you will.

There are "anti-facts" that have taken hold among millions and millions. Anti-facts (from my viewpoint anyway) such as:

The entire outside world is our creation -

- so the Jews caught in the Holocaust created it.

- so infants caught in the slaughter in Rwanda created their own murder, or they would not have been murdered.

I hear this from all sides from people in the New Age spirituality movement, along with those attracted to older belief systems like Taoism.

The universe is perfect - so any agony is perfect (this again comes from New Age spirituality).

More "anti-facts". All opinions are equal - and also all cultures and religions. This is a Western mass hallucination - even though it means all opinions are not equal.

How is this so? If all opinions are equal, then the opinion that they are not equal, being also an opinion, is obviously equal to the opinion that they are.

(Actually, the opinion that opinions are not equal is the one opinion that people who think opinions are all equal do not consider equal - even though this makes no sense - but then neither does the opinion that all opinions are equal. ( For much more on this, click here.)

My point is not to decry one belief or another, one opinion or another - but to look at one big danger inherent in the small world phenomenon - mass hallucination, illusion, delusion.

Of course, mass hallucinations have always been popular among humans.

Think of most religious beliefs. God will burn in hell anyone who does not follow this or that exact rule - has sex outside marriage, say - engages in homosexual activity, for example - believes in the existence of any other deity, for example.

Our propensity for mass hallucinations knows no bounds. The belief in the evil or inferiority of the Jews by many Christians and even more Muslims is one such hallucination. Christian anti-Semitism existed over time, for over a thousand years - everywhere Christians went this belief went with them.

And only a few years ago, I heard educated Muslim Egyptians calmly assert that Jews were lower than dogs, and claim this is a fact substantiated by the Quran.

Hard to break mass hallucinations - beliefs based on belief unfounded by fact, unbacked by fact, contradicted by fact.

**

Now, in the West, are we just trading one set of hallucinations (on the inferiority of Jews, women, homosexuals, for instance) for another equally powerful set (the equality of all opinions, cultures, religions)?

**

What's the danger of these delusions? They keep us from perceiving and acting on perceptions.

They keep us from the world. They keep us trapped in illusions.

**

Imagine there is a fire in your home. But you are caught in the hallucination that you are safe.

Imagine that you are safe in your home. But you are caught in the hallucination that a fire is taking over, engulfing more and more of it.

Or imagine that you are safe in your home, not a danger within or without. But you are caught in the delusion that enemies are at the door, armed with every weapon imaginable, from rifles to deadly diseases.

Or imagine that there is danger at the door, but you are caught in the illusion that you create your world, so though you see the danger at the door, you work at changing your beliefs, certain this will dispel the enemy at the door.

**

I don't know how else to dispel mass hallucinations except to call on us to pay more attention to facts and to logic - the two hallmarks of good thinking.

Jung collective unconscious - I've heard the term so often -
just hav3e a blurry sense of a powerful force that helps hold "reality" in place.

Mass hallucinations, mass histeria - political correctness gone mad -
and good thinking tossed aside like a pile of maggots.

A dangerous scary illusion - that the universe is perfect -
all suffering is for some higher cause, created by us because we wish to learn some lessons.

I wonder - what is this species I am part of?
