Gambles: any longterm project where the outcome is uncertain.
Bad gambles: is this projects that fail or something quite different?
It's a Gamble - Great? Gruesome?
Gambling - Essential, Addictive, Destructive
It would be convenient to come up with a simple answer. Gambling is awful. Or, gambling is wonderful.
Maybe I'll start with my conclusion. Without gambling we'd still be living in caves. Actually, we might never have gotten into caves. Quite a gamble, entering a cave. Who knows what one might find?
My conclusion. The gambling impulse is one of our greatest strengths. But that impulse comes with a great potential danger. The gambling impulse is like hunger – we need to feel hunger, or we'd starve. But when the hunger impulse gets divorced from the need for food, it's a huge problem.
Good reasons why people gamble? Anything new, anything uncertain, involves risks. Day after day, many of us move through uncertainties. We make choices. We take a gamble that we're making the right ones.
English, over and over, recognizes the positive side of gambling. We say thing like: Love is a gamble. Life is a gamble. He gambled everything for love. It's not just in language. We may devote our lives in a gamble that our efforts will lead to something valuable. Christopher Columbus. Pasteur. Marie Curie.
My big concern: why the massive destructive power of the gambling impulse? MORE
We're
born with the capacity to think.
What we learn to do with it,
is what matters.

Gambling at a casino, at a bingo hall, with weekly lotteries - that is gambling to lose.
But it cuts off valuable exploration if we go right on to the negative effects of gambling.
