The Idea Emporium
How to think? Are there thinking exercises to develop thinking skills, critical thinking? How to spot logical fallacies?

Elsa looking with ideas cooking

How to think?
Exercise the brain. Do some thinking.
Do thinking exercises.
Get tips. Tune up your brain.

A common illusion: "I know how to think."
Another common illusion: "My opinion
is just as good as anyone else's."
Could a genie with magic powers undo these evil spells?
Could there be a magic potion: how to think like a genius?
Only if the genie could make huge changes
to what is going on inside most people's heads.

- How to Think -
How to Know
if You're Thinking Like a Genius -
or Not?

What people want, I've heard over and over again, is HOW TO material. How to nail. How to hammer. How to knit. How to sew. I couldn't see myself providing any of that.

And then it hit me. There's one How To area I'm rather an expert in, and where I'd be delighted to give tips and pointers.

But ... in my experience it's the one area where most people don't want help. Instead, indignation and outrage: how dare anyone even think of thinking there could be something wrong with their thinking?

Well, there are many ways of checking if thinking - yours, mine, anyone's - makes sense. Are your arguments full of logical fallacies? Are you thinking like a 98 pound mental weakling?

How To Think
Tip Number One.

TIP #1
- EASY THINKING EXERCISE -
.

We're born with
the capacity to think.
All too often,
people don't develop
that capacity.

People say, "Don't be judgmental" -
as if we should not evaluate behavior,
from amazingly loving to atrocious.
Many intone, "No one has the right t
o judge opinions" - as if racist opinions,
say, had the same validity
as anti-racist opinions.

One question:
What is going on here?
Is it political correctness?
Is it lack of education
in developing thinking skills?

How to Think?

For many people this is more of a mystery than making a rocket that goes to the moon.
After all, a rocket is something solid - nuts and bolts and stuff like that.

But good thinking.

Somehow that's a mystery more mysterious than the inner workings of DNA -
and again, DNA is something solid.

How to think - people most often think they know how.

Shock and indigantion at any suggestion that there could be shortcomings.

What? Improvements could be possible?!
The nerve of anyone for suggesting that.

IDEA * EVALUATION * CONCLUSION * INSIGHT * COMMENTARY * CONTROVERSY * INTELLECTUAL CONFLICTS *
CONFLICTING VERSIONS AND CONCLUSIONS * DIFFICULT AREAS * OPINION * WELL-REASONED OPINION *
HOW TO THINK: TUNE UP YOUR BRAIN WITH THINKING EXERCISES.
HOW TO THINK: FIRST AND FOREMOST, CHECK OUT IF YOU'RE THINKING WELL,
ACKNOWLEDGE THAT NOT ALL THINKING IS EQUAL, AND YOU MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO LEARN.
HOW TO SWIM, HOW TO DIVE, HOW TO DANCE, HOW TO DRIVE -
PEOPLE CONSIDER IT NORMAL THAT LESSONS ARE NEEDED.
SO WHY DON'T THEY DO THE SAME WITH THINKING SKILLS, CRITICAL THINKING,
LEARNING HOW TO SPOT LOGICAL FALLACIES?
