You write: "I am sure the vast majority of you (Muslims) favor peace, no matter what is written in your old religious texts.”

It profits us little to conjecture about the peaceful intentions of Muslims when they have declared themselves.

In actual terms, the percentage of Muslims worldwide who distance themselves from Osama bin Laden and his methods is in the minority. These are demonstrable facts about Muslims, facts about Islam.

A survey (published in 2008) was commissioned by HM King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia to learn what Muslims really think:

* Fully one-third of pilgrims (to Mecca) approve of Osama bin laden and his methods. Only 21 percent distance themselves from his terrorist methods, and only 13 percent reject his goals.

* For the non-pilgrims (to Mecca), the numbers who distance themselves from Osama bin Laden and his methods are even lower: only 16 percent distance themselves and only 7 percent reject his goals.

This proves that vast numbers (perhaps half) of Muslims approve of "war until victory" to establish Islamic rule over the infidels. The "peaceful" Muslims believe that world conquest can be achieved by persuasion.

Another survey (taken in 2004) confirmed the above figures taken from a Pakistani sample. It says, "Osama bin Laden, however, is viewed favorably by large percentages in Pakistan (65%), Jordan (55%) and Morocco (45%). Even in Turkey, where bin Laden is highly unpopular, as many as 31% say that suicide attacks against Americans and other Westerners in Iraq are justifiable."

We must base our analysis of Islam on demonstrable facts about Muslims, facts about Islam, rather than wishful thinking! Many pandering Western politicians today are buttering up Islam and not portraying accurately what the average Muslim thinks in his heart, but dares not express in the Western world, i.e. that Muslims want a world conquered by Muslims where all infidels are ruled under Shariah law without their consent. This would be peaceably accomplished by lawyers and high Islamic birth rate or by violence following OBL (Osama bin Laden). According to this survey, it seems over half of Muslims support OBL.

The Koran, by the way, is not viewed as an "old religious text". Muslims see it as the complete, unalterable, letter-perfect, verbatim words of God delivered without human alteration and preserved perfectly ... which is valid for all time!

I feel like I've landed on another planet....

Two things come to mind:

* one, being a Jew in Nazi Germany, and not being able to believe what the Nazis were saying about Jews;

* two, being a woman at the start of the current women's rights movement, and hearing all the awful things about the situation of women, and just not being able to believe (or it could be a non-politicized black at the start of the civil rights movement - or a non-politicized gay or lesbian as the start of the gay rights movement).

In some ways, I was one of those women....
