The Idea Emporium
QUESTION:
CAN ONE IMPROVE THINKING?
CAN ONE LEARN HOW TO THINK?
****
SO, CAN ONE LEARN HOW TO THINK?
One answer comes from a joke.
How many therapists does it take to change a light bulb?
The answer. Only one,
but the light bulb has to really want to change.
It's the same when it comes to
developing thinking skills.
In many people, the light switch seems to be stuck on off.
No willingness to look at evidence or use logic.
****
NICE PEOPLE, VERY OFTEN, BUT ...
You might imagine such people are glowering and boorish. Sometimes, yes.
But very often, they're extremely
nice and caring. They don't want to hurt anyone, they may say over and over. Above all else, if they're from the West, they usually don't want to be judgmental - as if judging, thinking, discerning, were horrible monstrous evils instead of fabulous, marvelous, terrific good things.
Improve thinking? Arghh!
It would go against their kind of niceness.
****
SO, CAN ONE LEARN HOW TO THINK?
Of course. Just as one can, within reason, learn many
things - how to dance, how to eat well, how to exercise,
how to speak a foreign language.
Thinking skills are actually much easier to learn than dancing skills - a few rules rather than hundreds of complicated moves.
But many people prefer to make hundreds of awkward moves to avoid thinking than to do the stretches required to improve thinking - because thinking leads to undesired conclusions -
* such as, that the earth revolves around the sun;
* such as, that facts take precedence over opinions;
* such as, that niceness which requires non-thinking is a fake niceness, no nicer than a doctor not acknowledging the facts;
* such as, that thinking skills are an amazing tool -
along with feeling skills, such as empathy.
****
CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS
Critical thinking skills -
* available to all,
* underused by most,
* not touched by many -
as if thinking skills were leprosy,
that could deform anyone once infected.
Yet critical thinking skills are
an amazing tool -
along with feeling skills, such as empathy.
Still, while most people care that
someone's heart is in the right place,
they neglect the equally important head.

OKAY, SO WE CAN LEARN, BUT HOW ...?
In our society, people get help from experts on everything from how to floss their teeth, to how to balance their budgets, to how to improve their relationships.
But when it comes to thinking, most people go:
"Don't tell me what to think."
"I know what I think."
"My opinion is as good as yours."
"All opinions are equal."
"Who are you to tell me what is right?"
This is never a serious question. The person is often growling, ready to pounce, as if on an evil mouse intruding into cat territory. Improve thinking!? Does someone dare suggest something could be amiss with their thinking?
The same people wouldn't think of responding like that to a dental hygienist showing them how best to brush their teeth; a ski instructor trying to get them down the hill safely; a nutritionist pointing out the benefits of eating vegetables.

SO HOW DOES ONE LEARN????
How does one learn how to think,
how does one improve thinking?
One can self-assess one's thinking
- read up on critical thinking.
One can check out, for example,
the 2 fundamental ingredients of good thinking in
Dr Zee's FREE Jiffy Spiffy Recipe for Good Thinking.
But like with skate boarding,
snow boarding,
flossing teeth,
and dancing the cha cha cha,
being told how to improve thinking, how to think, what thinking skills are most important, why developing thinking matters -
all these are only the beginning.
Thinking - it's like any form of exercise.
It takes doing, not just learning about.
Unless one does some thinking, one doesn't improve thinking.
It all stays wishful thinking - which isn't thinking at all.
As is said about just about everything except riding a bicycle -
a skill one is told one will never forget -
use it or lose it.
That's the way it goes with thinking skills.
So, to improve thinking, one needs to exercise thinking skills.
The best thing - for those of us with a taste for good thinking, logical thinking, creative thinking, critical thinking -
thinking is one of life's most amazing pleasures.

The Idea Emporium
- why and what
One of my lifelong concerns has
been trying to make sense of reality. What is happening? Why is this happening?
And with that I come to thinking, developing thinking, learning thinking skills. Improve thinking - or how can things make more sense? Improve thinking - or how to figure out what it means, all the information and emotion coming at us.
We need to improve thinking skills.
And that brings me to: how to improve thinking? LIke everything - first, learn about thinking skills - and then, as it said about many things, use it or lose it.
