WHAT IS CRITICAL THINKING?
1 JIFFY SPIFFY RECIPE,
many DEFINITIONS
****
Most people take it for granted, that the way they think is fine.
"Don't tell me how to think." "I know what I think."
Right now, I won't go into that. Instead ...
What is critical thinking? Is it different from ordinary thinking? Answer: You can call it logical thinking, analytical thinking, good thinking - or just plain thinking.
It's not some separate kind of thinking.
So just what is critical thinking? It's thinking that works. It uses tools that, if 2 people use these tools, they're very likely to get the same results. If they don't, they can see where they differed in their use of the tools - and (very often) they can see which thinking is accurate.
No warfare. Instead, both thinkers should be on the same side, trying to figure out what makes sense.
That makes logical thinking, critical thinking, a treasure greater than whatever was hidden in the caves of Alibaba, riches beyond the wildest dreams of Sinbad the Sailor or Aladdin or Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty.
One immediate objection comes up. "I don't want anyone to tell me what to think."
So, does critical thinking tell you how to think? No. But it does show you how to think. In fact, even better, it shows you if your thinking is working well, or if you have a tendency to go off track.
Does that make critical thinking like most religions? This is right. This is wrong. God says so.
Not at all. You can check for yourself if the rules make sense. In other words, you can think about critical thinking. In fact, you're supposed to.
What critical thinking skills do you need to do such thinking? Just one. You need the skill to recognize what ingredients have to be present for something to qualify as critical thinking.
With these ingredients, you can tackle critical thinking questions without falling flat on your face. You can do a logical analysis and be sure it's a logical analysis - not something that can be toppled by anyone with just a few critical thinking skills.
Just what are these critical ingredients?
In a moment, 1 Critical Thinking How To Recipe
that gives the 2 critical ingredients.

Critical Thinking How To Recipe
It's simple. It has just 2 main ingredients,
and then a few other smaller ones.
All the ingredients are highly non-secret - just like North America was highly non-secret, but still totally undiscovered by humans until some arrived maybe 60,000, maybe 20,000 years ago. I'm not talking about Chris Columbus, of course - though he is relevant, because he was still totally in the dark about North America though other humans had lived there for millennia.
So it is with critical thinking. Some people are at home in
Critical Thinking Land. For some it's undiscovered territory -
but it sure sounds interesting. And some people want to stay away,
sure it's (at best) a vampire infested wasteland inhabited by dry
as dust professorial types who don't know their ass from their elbow.
These people are not thinking critically. They have just violated
the 2 basic rules of critical thinking.
Enough already!
