Caro saw nothing. Everyone else – and you know whom I mean by everyone else –" He raised his eyebrows twice.
            Whom did he mean? Caro had no idea.
            Her father continued in a conspiratorial tone. "Everyone else will think she was there … and she saw… You get my drift, Frank?"
            Caro looked from one to the other. Frank was nodding. That meant he understood.
            Caro did not. And then she did. The driver. If the driver was anywhere around, the driver who had hit Jake and kept driving, that person would think Caro must know something.
            "In that case, Pat," said Fearless Frank, "it might be a good idea for your little girl to be extra careful for the next while. Because someone may not be too happy about what they think she knows. Or someone may be sure we know something, and so may turn themself in. You never can tell."

And that is how it happened that word got around that Caro Carolina Flaherty-Pinkerton, barely thirteen, had been out on the Ormstown Road, way past the end of town, with Jake Wetherby, sixteen, when he was hit by a car from behind, thrown flying. His back was broken – three smashed vertebrae – and his spinal cord was cut. For now, that was all the doctors knew. Caro had run for help, and that probably saved his life, but he was still going to be in a wheelchair to the end of his living days.
            People suddenly thought of Caro differently, talked of her differently.
            Cassie and Liana were wide-eyed - they never would have thought Caro could get near Jake. He was too too … They were both silent for a moment, at a loss for words. He was too absolutely much. He and his gang looked all the girls over from under eyelids hanging so low, you couldn't see the eyes, but you knew they were watching. You couldn't hear the comments either, but you could see the heads turn just slightly and you could hear the snickers.
            Cassie and Liana just plain couldn't believe it, what they heard about Caro being with Jake at one in the morning.
            Most of the grownups could. Some remembered schoolday crushes. Thirteen wasn't so young. Others said times were changing and not for the better.
