TeeDee was the only cat who survived.
Once there were many cats and kittens on the farm. Also, lots of cows.
And plenty of milk for the cats. All that changed when the cows went.
Nothing was given to the cats. They were left to fend for themselves,
to survive on whatever they could hunt.
It wasn't enough.
Starvation.
My first sight of TeeDee. I had gone to the the farm for something else.
Then I saw a kitten cat
clinging to a large locked garbage container,
desperately trying to open it. Skinny, starvation skinny.
Her owner: "Oh her, she's too lazy and stupid to hunt."
I approached slowly. She let me take her - and that saved her life.
It took a couple of months before I stopped seeing the
spikes of her backbone, and every skinny rib.
One thing hasn't changed. She still holds on and clings -
just like she was clinging to that garbage can when I first saw her.
It's a
tremendous urgent clingyness. Maybe that's how she survived -
with a tremendous will to live.
She is the only survivor of all the cats and kittens that were living
on that farm at that time. A warrior cat who fought for her life.
By the time I went by, she was the only one left.
I know because I went back, left food in the barn. The children told me
of 2 kittens, even skinnier, that had been theirs. They had last
been seen a couple of weeks earlier. They cared. The thinking part
of my brain knew 2 kittens, even skinnier than the one I rescued,
could not have survived 2 more weeks with no food.
I still left food for days. They were never seen.
I wonder: is it TeeDee's tremendous will that drove her to hold on
as long as she did? Again, I think of her as a warrior cat -
not to hurt, but to struggle to get at food just inches away.
Her name. TeeDee, short for Petit Diable, little devil -
because she is so utterly strong willed and soon became
very ready for mischief.
I am glad I came in time for her.
I am sorry I was not in time for the other kittens and cats.
