It all began on cold November night.
"Let the cat in," said Philippe.

"The cats are in," I answered.

"No, they're not," said Philippe. "I see one outside."

I looked. Right outside the kitchen window was a small cat face.
I looked more closely. Gray - just like our two cats (we had only 2 cats
at the time, both gray). But the face looked different. "That's not our cat."

At that, something changed inside Philippe. "No, no, then leave it."
His tone was suddenly sharp. I heard the worry -
he was afraid I would take the cat inside.

I didn't. But I went outside with a big bowl of food.
Soon the skinny gray cat was wolfing it down.

I worried about the cat that night. "What if she goes away? She's so thin.
She hasn't eaten for days." I hated the thought of the little thing starving.

"Runs away," snorted Philippe. "Why would she do that? You've fed her."

"How could I not?" was my answer.

I was relieved the next morning - the little gray cat was still there.
And soon she was inside. A small gray cat with smudges.

For a few months, her name was Smudges.

****

That changed when she became a mama cat with seven kittens.

It's not having kittens that brought about the name change.
A side of her emarged we had never suspected -
she was so much a mama cat. And not only at the start.

The name change didn't happen all at once, but slowly, as time passed
and she kept mothering her kittens, letting them nurse. The kittens
were also given kitten formula and later kitten food - but Smudges still let
them come to her and nurse all they liked. She loved being a mama cat.

Six weeks passed, then eight - the usual time when kittens are given away.
I found a home for some.

Smudges kept nursing those that stayed. Three months. Four. Five.
Now the kittens were larger than she was.

When they were six months old, she finally decided she had had enough.
But by then her name had changed. She was no longer Smudges, but MamaCat.

No more kittens. She was neutered. But her new name stayed - MamaCat.

The Scaredy Cat Princess

MamaCat is a bold little cat. She is tough.
One of her kittens is the total opposite - the Scaredy Cat Princess.

Like MamaCat, the Scaredy Cat Princess had another name to begin with -
Borneo. She was the biggest in the litter - a sturdy kitten with a sturdy name.

Months passed. She would not let anyone near her, except me,
if I was ultra careful. It was easy for the other cats to chase her.

And so her true name emerged.

How did I find what I see as her true name?
Is it the love of cats that brought me to it?
Maybe, in a way. It isn't a general love for cats - but I take pleasure
in paying attention to them, seeing how each is different, each is special.

And so, as I paid attention to Borneo, I came to the name that
seemed to suit her - the Scaredy Cat Princess,
delicate looking, very beautiful, and incredibly timid.

Why is she like that? Who knows?

She loves to cuddle with MamaCat.

Will she always be a Scaredy Cat? Who knows?

I have done all I could to make her less afraid, to touch her and
stroke her when she would let me, to slowly get closer to her.

She is changing a little.

BUT SHE WILL NEVER BE LIKE ZONZON THE BOLD ...
