Timothy Cat almost didn't make it into the house ...

Timothy Cat almost didn't make it into the house. It took months.
It started in mid-summer. Meows outside at night. A big beige cat face
staring in the window. Of course food was put out for him. He marched
to the door. Meow! The message was clear. Let me in!
The answer. No! Enough cats inside already.
Plus, to be honest, I did give him a try. He came in, stared hard
at the nearest cat. Out of my way! I'm in! You're out!
That might work in a cat society. It didn't work in my home. Enough. Out.
Plus he was an adult male. Not easy to integrate a bossy adult male
into a family of cats.
And so Timothy Cat became the record holder in terms of time
to get into the house. The first 2 cats came from an animal shelter -
the only time we actually went out looking for cats.
The third, skinny and meowing outside on a cold November night,
was taken in almost immediately. After that, there were kittens.
Then, starving TeeDee was brought in the moment I found her.
So was TiChat, found blind in the barn.
And so was ZonZon,
5 months old when my partner's mother died.
As for Timothy Cat ... July, August, September, October.
He came and went, always kept coming back.
Snow.
And still he came back.
You know what finally happened. I took him in, took the chance that
he could become part of the family.
The first for two months in the house, he was an outsider.
He spent his time alone - often sitting still, stlll as a porcelaain cat,
as the saying goes, but clearly very watchful. He was often hissed at.
He was silent or hissed back. Occasionally he chased another cat -
and then I caught him and put him into the sunroom, all alone.
Chasing cats is not allowed, according to my house rules -
especially not by Timothy Cat, larger than any of the other cats
.
Then in came TiNoir (little black cat). TiNoir the Warm and Cuddly,
TiNoir the Friendly, TiNoir the Easy-Going. Maybe most important,
TiNoir the Kitten Cat, about 4 months old.
Kittens, I've found, are much more easily included than adult cats -
and on top of that, TiNoir just has a way about him, as if he expects
everyone to like him. And he isn't easily discouraged.
The cat who reciprcated the most: Timothy Cat, who played gently
for hours with the much smaller TiNoir, who would gently roll TiNoir,
who would chase but gently. TiNoir loved it.
And so Timothy the Lonely became Timothy who has a Best Friend.
In fact, both TiNoir and Timothy Cat both found a best friend.
