Highschool Carryover: Hide professional expertise, education credentials,
knowledge expertise. Hide being top authority, best authority, actual authority.

EXPERT - but hiding her light under a bushel

It must be a leftover from high school: the good students - the brains - were supposed to be stuck up. It was very important to me to show I wasn't like that, that I didn't think I was superior.

"No one would ever guess you have a PhD." i remember a friend saying that with a tone that sounded like disgust.

He didn't mean: you aren't smart. He didn't mean: you don't know things.

He meant: you don't use long words. He meant: you're easy to understand.

There's more. I rarely mention my educational credentials, my doctoral degree (except when I'm teaching). I rarely mention all I've studied. I rarely cite my expertise, my knowledge based authority.

I learned my lesson well: it's bad, it's awful to come across as arrogant, as a snob - and (high school rule) mentioning doctoral degrees means you're a snob.

I think there's even more. I learned that I must not do anything that might make other people feel less, feel bad, feel intimidated.

****

By the way, the brains in my high school weren't stuck up. I found them a lot more fun than the non-brains. And smart. Ready to learn. None did stuff like throw chalk. I felt at home with them.

****

So why am I hiding my expertise under a bushel?

Time to face up to it - or rather, time for those around me to face up to it, should they be uncomfortable: I have a PhD. Triple disciplinary - meaning I did comprehensives in three subjects. So a PhD comprehensive in Psychology, a PhD comprehensive in Sociology, and a third PhD comprehensive in Literary Studies. Heavy stuff. And amazing fun for me. As much fun as any sport to an athlete.

****

Funny how athletes aren't pushed to hide their accomplishments. Instead, they're asked: how did it feel, winning a gold medal? They aren't told: tone it down, you'll make others feel bad. Instead, we're supposed to feel along with them, feel motivated by their achievements.

Okay, so here I am.

An expert. An achiever. An authority.

In fact, a top authority, actual authority, best authority:
- in the impact of social movements,
- on the rage stage of inner development,
- on the impact of the fear of male violence on both women and men,
- on political correctness gone mad,
- and on good thinking, critical thinking.

I have education credentials, media credentials, professional expertise.

That's not the big thing, though. In a deep down way, the credentials don't matter. What matters is the research, the learning, the knowing. So while I have education credentials, that isn't what matters to me: what matters is the actual authority that comes from knowing. That for me is the best authority - something I've always valued.
