Famous Einstein Quotes
"You have to learn the rules of the game.
And then you have to play them better than anyone else."
My parents didn't want to live as their parents did - and they each did do hugely better. My father didn't beat his wife and children. My mother didn't abandon her children.
But there's so much they couldn't get to - like a truly loving relationship wth each other, or with us, for the most part.
And thre's so much that I - again trying to do better than them - haven't managed to accomplish.
And that brings me to a famous Albert Einstein quote - one I had never heard before:
"You have to learn the rules of the game.
And then you have to play better than anyone else."
Learn the rules. Know the rules. Use the rules to play better than anyone else.
That just hasn't been my vision of Einstein, genius.
I've long known another Albert Einstein quote - maybe his most famous - about imagination: that imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge can ony get us from A to B, but imagaination can take us anywhere.
"You have to learn the rules." That less famous quote by Einstein stopped me cold. There he was, valuing knowing the rules, rather than breaking them, or wondering or imagining.
And then I think - right, he knows them better than anyone. My parents didn't have a clue about how to do what they wanted, how to create what they wanted. They just knew what they didn't want.
Time to learn more rules - good helpful rules.
**
The rules aren't enough, actually.
But knowing the rules can be so powerful. How to create closeness without smothering? How to talk and listen, give and take? How to deal with emotions that grip us though we don't want them to? How to feel feelings we do want to be feeling - like love and caring and gratitude?
Over and over, more learning of rules.
**
And then there's implementing the rules - not only knowing how to access certain feelings, but doing it. Or in Einstein's words, "then you have to play tem better than anyone else."
Great sports stars do an awful lot of practicing.
So, by the way, did Einstein. Here are two of his most famous quotes:
"I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious."
"It's not that I'm so smart; it's just that I stay with problems longer."
**
I think I'm one of those who stays with problems longer - who stays with them until she solves them. The past few years, some of those problems have had to do with feelings, especially finding out how to feel more out love. (Buried Love - Confessions of a Love-Not Junkie.)
**
Rule one: explore to find what works. If the first tool doesn't do it, look for something else. You can't climb Mount Everest, for instance, with running shoes. You need better equipment. Gardening with a spoon also isn't very effective.
**
Back to Einstein and his somewhat famous quote.
Yes, learn those rules. And play them better than anyone else.
Rules - those are a bit like maps. The better the map, the more you are likely to get through rough terrain.
Another thing about rules and maps. For me - for whoever is going there - it may be uncharted terrirotry. That doesn't mean it actually is uncharted.
The rules, the maps - those are often charts created by others, so we can navigate our way through. Or we are - as the saying goes - reinventing the wheel.
A very important rule for me: learn the rules.
