DEATH BY CHATTER
This summer our old dog slowly slipped toward the border separating life and death. She took a lot of care. But I did not feel deadened by the caring.
My mother is also slowly slipping. Memory going. Repetitions.
It is not those things that bring me to death by chatter.
She demands - not in words - that I not be myself, that I act responses, think funny what I don't think funny, and so on.
It is something I cringe from - something I have avoided as best i can much of my life. Death by chatter.
I have much more easily done things that take true care - when she panicked about dying, I've slept with her.

A boring life, for me, is when i am taken away form myself.
Story: One afternoon, around 1800, the father of Jane Austen (who became a hugely famous writer)
announced that he was retiring to Bath - a city with lots of social life. Jane fainted. Death by chatter. For the next dozen years, while living in Bath, she did not write. She had written 3 novels (she was just 21 or maybe 23 when she was faced with the move to Bath). It's only in her last years (she died at 40), when she was again in the country, away from social "life", that she wrote again - 3 more novels.
She only fainted briefly. Then she became the good daughter. But the move almost killed her creativity. It did smother it.
