today: A GOOD DAY Elsa's Creativity Space - Update About a dozen years ago, I began waking up with word pieces, songs, spoken word pieces in my head. Escape Velocity One morning I woke up to a dream of a cowboy, complete with huge cowboy hat and fiddle. He was singing, in his cowboy voice: Don't ever forget I had no dream of becoming a songwriter or spoken word performer. But I did write down the words in my head, and kept on writing until it felt that the piece was done. But what are they, these things most easily classified as "spoken word"? And why should you bother looking at them? In my case, most often they capture moments. That's the best reason for looking at them. They bring alive moments of life, of feeling. They rarely have a totally traditional structure, because a moment is rarely something that fits a neat structure. I did think, at the start, that I would edit the pieces. I'd let them come as they liked, then chop them into the right shape, into song shape. They fell into pieces. Nothing felt right. I decided to let them be. Some of you like the non-traditional. Far more of you don't want to look at anything that smacks of poetry, and especially not poetry that isn't quite poetry. I say, give it a try. This week I've uploaded sound for 3 pieces. Sound: music along with words - words spoken or sung or both. One piece is serious. Words Cannot Contain. The words came this spring when I heard from a friend that his son had died. In this case, the musician and singer is my friend Ed, who lost his son. This rough draft was recorded about 3 months after his son's death. Then there's Tank Almost Empty. I think we've all sometimes felt that the tank is almost empty. Finally, there's something I call a silly season piece. At the Green Cabaret, the Aliens Play. Not only do they play, they snork and they squink, they fornick and kaninck. So many different moments, so many different feelings. **** And that brings me to: it's been a good day. A long one, but productive. I wrote about today a bit in my creativity blog. Why was it a good day? Nothing awe inspiring. But some more steps have been taken. And I know that I'm not all alone on this creativity journey. Right now, thanks to my partner, Philippe. And to two friends. Mark, who's been there for a long time for sound production. And Ed, musician who hears music when he reads words. There are others. Karen, painter and long-time friend, comes to mind. But Philippe, Mark and Ed are the ones who come most to mind right now. I hope you too have had a good day. As always, all the best, Elsa ____________ _________________
