today: HOW TO LOVE YOURSELF

Hello again,

Where are these updates going, you may sometimes wonder. Sometimes there are ideas, sometimes poems, sometimes they're about Elsa. Often she asks: what about you, is this happening to you?

So what can you expect from these updates?

Even if they're about me, they're not "I did this" "I did that" writings. Almost always, I'm looking at some bigger pattern - like the desire for grace, the sudden shift in life because of some unexpected meeting, the staying stuck because some connection can't be found.

Often I'm looking outward, at others, at the world - at the good side of the gambling impulse, at the rage of the self-righteous, at the opinion that all opinions are equal. Just as I think about patterns in my life, I think about what I see.

Feelings - those most often come out in the spoken word poetry and music - from frivolous fun (White Chocolate) to deep loss (I Hold You).

In Caro's Quest - ghost dog, hit and run, weird stranger - there's everything. Things happen. And there's Caro, who isn't sure quite what is happening, what is real. So, once again, there's exploring reality as well as the story.

In a way, everything is motivated by feeling and thinking combined. The thinking comes from things I feel about, as well as wonder about. And I both express feelings (in the spoken word poetry) and think about them, as in Love-Not Junkie.

So for me, from the inside, everything comes from a similar space.

My guess is that your life too is fueled by feeling and thinking, and the better the flow is, the more rich your life is likely to be.

I just had another thought. I try to make space for all of me. There's lots that stays private, or that I'm not interested in conveying - what I had for breakfast, that I just chatted with my sister. But in a larger sense, I've made room, on my site, and also in these updates, for all of me.

You may have noticed that lately I've moved from only writing about, to also offering e-books. It's like with everything else: if they appeal to you, great. If not, please pass.

What will happen next? I'm not certain. I know I will continue with everything.

I'm expecting a year of more and more coming together - completing projects and writings.

It would be great if you're looking forward to coming along.

Or this may not be right for you - in which case, we'll be parting ways.

And into my inbox suddenly pops the result of a large poll: the majority of Muslims support death for those who convert from Islam to another religion. (This is from a Pew poll on Muslims around the world, reported in the Los Angeles Times, Dec 6, 2010. It's in my inbox courtesy of Google alerts. Google lets you get news for specific topics, like critical thinking, Islam, poetry, anything).

And I laugh at how different this is, from what is right for me. For me, it matters so much - in many areas of life - that you are welcome to stay, welcome to go.

Today, I will go back to mentioning someone I've encouraged you to give to, about a month ago - Rick Hodes. He's a doctor who has spent 20 years in Ethiopia, helping children with strange illnesses like spinal tuberculosis. The spine bends until it is pyramid-shaped and then collapses, paralyzing and killing. It is treatable.

Some of you are stretched as far as you can go. Some of you are already giving as much as you like to give. Some of you are not drawn to this particular need.

Anything else? This rather relates to the finding that the majority of Muslims support death for those who leave Islam. I've thought quite a bit about the ultimate reality. If you know anything at all about me, you'll know that it doesn't make sense to me that all religious explanations are right (we go to heaven or hell, we get reincarnated, we die and are dead, etc). But what might make most sense? I started putting together my ideas, and have more to say. In the meantime, I welcome your input.

And for the poetry lovers among you, I wrote, long ago, a poem that is sort of cosmic-force centered - The World is My Kingdom.

And that is still far from all of me. Most recently I was exploring buried love, in some diary blogs. Now there's an e-book on this inner quest for emotional healing and how to love yourself.

In general, I see lots of inner richness in all of us.
