WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE THE STORY
WORDS CANNOT CONTAIN
WORDS CANNOT
words cannot describe
words cannot describe
your leaving
words cannot contain
words cannot contain
the pain of
your leaving
your dying
words are empty shells
words can only tell
the shell of the story
inside is the pain
inside I cry in vain
cannot
stop
your leaving
you don't want to go
my son
this story shows
your pain
at your leaving
my son
if I could hold
the pain
your pain
I would you know
my heart
can't contain the grief
of your leaving
my heart cannot contain
my longing in vain
to change
your dying
my son
I cry again
inside my shell of pain
my shell it cracks
my life it lacks
words to contain
your leaving
words cannot describe
words can't bring alive
my son who has died
leaving
a child
grandson of mine
just three
and you have died
words cannot contain
can't bring alive
my son who has died
his life just begun
a three year old son
a wife by his side
her grief like a tide
no holding it contained
a world of love and pain
my son
my son
I lack words
but I hope you can hear
the love so near
the love like a tide
the grief that you have died
I just cannot believe
my son
I am numb
my son
I can't believe
my son
I am numb
my son
has died

THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
I've known Ed, a musician friend, for a long time.
Then came
spring 2007.
I knew Ed's son had terminal cancer, was dying. I knew the death was coming. One day I emailed Ed for a phone number, and got back a brief message - the phone number and the message that he was in Calgary for his son's funeral. His son had died.
I "heard" the words that open this song - words cannot describe, words cannot describe - words cannot contain, words cannot contain.
I sat down and followed the words in my head, words that came with the simple opening melody.
I sent Ed an email - my sympathy for his great loss. I wasn't sure Ed would welcome the song, but a couple of days later I sent the words.
It was a few months before we sat down, in the back yard of his place. We ended up with a rough recording, the first version that is here now. The words and opening melody are as they came. Ed found the bridge melody. The arrangement is his, but I was there, to help bring the song alive as it sounded inside me.
More is to be done, but this first version will stay.

Time has gone by. It's 2011.
There's another version now,
done with another musician. Very different -
and yet the feeling is the same.
You can listen to the new version here.
Once again, grief, pain and longing in
poems about death, songs about death.

A dozen
years ago,
I began to wake up
with word pieces -
words music, spoken word, songs -
in my head.
Escape velocity.
Echo of the echo.
Tank almost empty.
Can't cross the gap.
Welcome into my world.
Song Cry.
