Life After Death Stories?     

There is just one problem for me with life after death stories, with accounts of life after death experiences transmitted (or supposedly transmitted) by someone dead to someone living. The problem: no one dead has sent any messages to me. Or anyway, my antennae haven't been working.

After my father died, for a long time - maybe 2 years - I felt him beside me often, especially when I would sit on a bench outdoors. And my dog, when she died, I felt her in the car with me, on my lap, the way she loved to be. My hands could feel her fur. That was for far less long. But those were feelings. No evidence of anything.

Still, whether they count as proof of life after death or not, I'm drawn to stories that feel true to me. In my family, there's only been one such story, one I know of, anyway. It's not of life after death, but of someone, at the time of death, reaching thousands of kilometers.

It happened during World War Two. One of my father's brothers, 18, was on the Russian front. He was shot in the thigh and left for a day on the battlefield. He basically slowly bled to death. On that day, my grandfather claimed this son came to him to say goodbye. He told everyone Joseph had come to tell him he was dying.

So many death notices were coming to the village that no one paid any attention. Weeks later the letter arrived. Joseph was dead. He had died the day my grandfather experienced his coming to say goodbye.

This is no proof of life after death, no evidence. It's far from enough to prove anything, even that someone dying may somehow reach someone they love.

Life after death experiences. I know someone who is sure he connects to those who have died. It started at a time of intense loss. His young son-in-law lost his life. So this man is sure, inside himself, of the life after death experience of those he is sure he connects with. But again, this isn't proof.

The post-death experiences I hear almost nothing about are ones I'd expect to be common, given that they loom large in several huge religions - experiences of heaven or hell. What do others tell me about life after death?   Click to CONTINUE
