today: THE COWBOY SINGS: Elsa's Creativity Space - Update Poetry, songs, music - those have been uppermost this past while. Love Songs. Anger Pieces. Mellow Moments. I woke up a few mornings ago with a cowboy singing, loud and clear in my ear, "There's Something I Have to Say." I almost turned over and went back to sleep, but instead, though sleepy, I followed the words. I dragged myself to my computer, did my best to sing the melody. I opened Word and started typing: there's moon rise **** My father loved country and western, opera, Edith Piaf, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley - big emotion, not cool and laidback, but intensely full of feeling. That's the kind of song the cowboy was singing. The last time I got a cowboy song that loud and clear, it was "It hurts when you break a leg or a heart." I rolled my eyes, and yet respected the words enough to write the song down. **** My thinking side hasn't kept quiet. It's been busy wondering about the very different ways anger is seen when you call it anger poetry and when you call it rap. I googled "anger poetry" - and got all kinds of messages about how bad anger is, how destructive. Then I googled rap, and came to a celebration of anger. I even came across a (tongue-in-cheek) recipe for a rap break-up song. Central: insult your girlfriend for being such a loser as to break up with you. None of the crying cry-baby stuff. Anger - the armor of invulnerability. Ultra coolness. If you like the thinking stuff, I wrote a piece on attitudes to emotion, States of Mind. It starts: "All emotions are not considered equal." MORE I've just realized another huge divide in attitudes to emotion: between those in the country music world and the rap world. The country world - you wear your heart on your sleeve. You go "Walking After Midnight" searching for the one who has left you. You have an Achy-Breaky Heart. That's far away from the rap world. In that world, it's dangerous to walk at any time. **** I've dipped into all those worlds of emotion, and more. Here's something not too far from the rap world (in a minor way): Then, LOVE: LOVE TROUBLE: I'll end back where I started, with the cowboy with something to say: There's more and more - loneliness, longing, wanting help, peacefulness, relaxed waiting, fed-up waiting, grief, joy. MORE Maybe I will give the last word to the thinking side: it's good to feel fully - and poetry and songs, at their best, bring us more alive to many emotions. The thinking side also helps me in another way. Sometimes I cringe, when the words in my head are ultra corny - "it hurts when you break a leg or a heart." So what, my thinking side goes, in her prim and proper way, emotions are sometimes ultra corny. Yes, they are. **** The light now is golden. Late afternoon. Early evening. The leaves on the trees are a lush vivid green. It's full summer. Outside are fields with huge bales of hay. May your summer be full and wonderful. All the best, Elsa ____________ _________________
